13) <h2><strong>THE TOR PROJECT ANNOUNCES THREE-YEAR DEVELOPMENT ROADMAP</strong></h2>

15) <p><strong>DEDHAM, MA</strong> - The Tor Project has published its <a
16) href="https://svn.torproject.org/svn/tor/trunk/doc/roadmaps/2008-12-19-roadmap-full.pdf">three year
17) development roadmap</a>, focused on providing anti-censorship tools and
18) services for the advancement of Internet freedom in closed
19) societies.</p>

21) <p>Tor's tools and technologies are already used by hundreds of 
22) thousands of people to protect their activities online.  These 
23) users include journalists and human rights workers in politically 
24) rigid countries communicating with whistleblowers and dissidents. 
25) Law enforcement officers on Internet sting operations stay 
26) anonymous with Tor, as do people wanting to post socially 
27) sensitive information in chat rooms, like rape or abuse survivors 
28) and those with illnesses.  The Tor network also provides 
29) protection for people looking for another layer of privacy from 
30) the millions of websites and ISPs bent on collecting private 
31) information and tracking their moves online.</p>

33) <p>While Tor's original goal was to provide this important 
34) anonymity, many people around the world use Tor to get around 
35) Internet censorship, as well.  <a href="http://www.hrw.org/">Human
36) Rights Watch</a> and <a href="http://globalvoicesonline.org/">Global 
37) Voices Online</a> have both recommended Tor as a tool to circumvent 
38) censorship regimes in oppressive nations. The roadmap is focused 
39) on providing anti-censorship tools and services for the 
40) advancement of Internet freedom in closed societies.</p>

42) <p>"If your Internet provider can't see what sites you're looking 
43) at, that also means they can't prevent you from reaching sites 
44) they don't want you to see," said Roger Dingledine, Tor Project 
45) Leader.  "This new roadmap with support from the larger community 
46) will let us make Tor even better at fighting censorship.  With 
47) three years of funding, we can tackle larger problems than 
48) before, and we can focus on making sure that Tor can grow to 
49) handle all the people who want to use it."</p>

51) <p>Tor welcomes additional sponsors to join <a
52) href="https://www.torproject.org/sponsors">current sponsors</a>; 
53) such as the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the NLnet Foundation,
54) and hundreds of individual donors. While existing funders are enough to
55) get the items on the roadmap started, an additional $2.1 million over the
56) next three years will turn the roadmap into usable tools.</p>
