914) <p><a href="<page projects/arm>">Arm</a> is a Tor command line status
915) monitor on *nix environments (Linux, Mac, and BSD). It functions much like
916) top does, giving a CLI overlay of Tor's bandwidth usage, connections,
917) configuration, log, etc. Thus far its design has been geared for Tor relay
918) operators. However, this doesn't need to be the case. This project would be
919) to expand and simplify arm to make it useful for Tor's client users
920) too.</p>
921)
922) <p>This would include UI design, experimenting, and a lot of python
923) hacking. Here's some ideas for client functionality arm could provide:</p>
924)
925) <ul>
926) <li>A panel for client connections, showing each hop of the user's
927) circuits with the ISP, country, and jurisdiction where those relays
928) reside. Other interesting information would be the circuit's latency, how
929) long its been around, and its possible exit ports. Some of this will be
930) pretty tricky and require some experimentation to figure out what
931) information can be fetched safely (for instance, scraping rdns and whois
932) lookups could give hints about a relay's ISP, but we'd need to do it on
933) all Tor relays to avoid leaking our connections to the resolver).</li>
934)
935) <li>Options to let the user request new circuits (the &quot;New
936) Identity&quot; feature in Vidalia), select the exit country, etc.</li>
937)
938) <li>A panel showing Internet application and if their connections are
939) being routed through Tor or not (giving a warning if there's leaks).</li>
940)
941) <li>The status of the bridges we're configured to use (ie, are they up?).
942) This would include adding control port functionality to Tor for <a
943) href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/2068">ticket
944) 2068</a>.</li>
945)
946) <li>A one click option to set Tor to be a client, relay, or bridge. The
947) goal would be to make it trivial for users to voluntarily contribute to
948) the Tor network.</li>
949)
950) <li>Menus as an alternative to hotkeys to make the interface more
951) intuitive and usable for beginners (<a
952) href="http://gnosis.cx/publish/programming/charming_python_6.html">example</a>).</li>
953)
954) <li>Look at Vidalia and TorK for ideas and solicit input from the Tor community.</li>
955) </ul>
956)
957) <p>
958) More information is available in the following sections of arm's dev notes: <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/arm#ConnectionListingExpansion">Connection Listing Expansion</a>, <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/arm#CircuitDetails">Circuit Details</a>, and <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/arm#ClientModeUseCases">Client Mode Use Cases</a>

973) Compass was first designed to be a cli app and then hacked into a web app.
974) The codebase needs to be refactored such that the main processing code is
975) separated from the display functions(probably into separate files) and made
976) modular so that adding more features (<a
977) href="https://trac.torproject.org/6612">#6612</a>) is easy. For example, the
978) main processing logic could be in compass.py, whereas print_groups() and other
979) display related functions could be part of a separate cli.py; web.py would also
980) have to modified to make use of this new modular code. Bonus points for adding

998) The existing port of Tor to Android is basically a straight
999) cross-compile to Linux ARM. There has been no work done in looking at
1000) possible optimizations of Tor within a mobile hardware environment or on

1166) <p>Tor needs to be tested far more thoroughly. This is a
1167) multi-part effort. To start with, our unit test coverage should
1168) rise substantially, especially in the areas outside the utility
1169) functions. This will require significant refactoring of some parts
1170) of Tor, in order to dissociate as much logic as possible from
1171) globals.</p>
1172) <p>Additionally, we need to automate our performance testing. We've got

1174) (though we need somebody to set it up on Windows),

1194) One of Vidalia's existing features is a network map that shows the user
1195) the approximate geographic location of relays in the Tor network and
1196) plots the paths the user's traffic takes as it is tunneled through the
1197) Tor network. The map is currently not very interactive and has rather
1198) poor graphics. Instead, we implemented KDE's Marble widget such
1199) that it gives us a better quality map and enables improved interactivity,
1200) such as allowing the user to click on individual relays or circuits to
1201) display additional information. We want to add the ability
1202) for users to click on a particular relay or a country containing one or
1203) more Tor exit relays and say, "I want my connections to exit
1204) from here."
1205) </p>
1206)
1207) <p>
1208) This project will first involve getting familiar with Vidalia
1209) and the Marble widget's API. One will then integrate the widget
1210) into Vidalia and customize Marble to be better suited for our application,
1211) such as making circuits clickable, storing cached map data in Vidalia's
1212) own data directory, and customizing some of the widget's dialogs.
1213) </p>
1214)
1215) <p>

1380) <a href="https://code.google.com/p/torsocks/">Torsocks</a> and <a
1381) href="https://code.google.com/p/dsocks/">dsocks</a> are wrappers that will
1382) run applications, intercept their outgoing network connections, and push
1383) those connections through Tor. The goal is to handle applications that
1384) don't support proxies (or don't supporting them well). To get it right,
1385) they need to intercept many system calls. The syscalls you need to
1386) intercept on Linux differ dramatically from those on BSD. So Torsocks
1387) works fine on Linux, dsocks works ok on BSD (though it may be less
1388) maintained and thus might miss more syscalls), and nothing works well
1389) on both. First, we should patch dsocks to use Tor's <i>mapaddress</i>
1390) commands from the controller interface, so we don't waste a whole
1391) round-trip inside Tor doing the resolve before connecting. Second,
1392) we should make our <i>torify</i> script detect which of torsocks or

1462) <p>Tor provides hidden services. These services are only reachable through
1463) Tor itself, and provide greater anonymity both for the providers of the
1464) service and for its users.</p>
1465) <p>One current downside of Tor hidden services is that they are addressed
1466) using 80-bit base32-encoded addresses such as "v2cbb2l4lsnpio4q.onion".
1467) These addresses are hard to remember; this makes them hard to use
1468) within amnesic environment like Tails.</p>
1469) <p>The project is to implement a petname system for Tor hidden services:
1470) a way for users or providers of Tor hidden services to add a simple
1471) 'nickname' to a central database. Users could then query this central
1472) database to retrieve a full hidden service address by giving
1473) a nickname.</p>
1474) <p>Adding petnames to the database could be done using a web interface or
1475) automated fetch like those described in the <a
1476) href="https://gitweb.torproject.org/torspec.git/blob/HEAD:/proposals/ideas/xxx-onion-nyms.txt">&quot;.onion
1477) nym system&quot; proposal</a>.</p>
1478) <p>Querying the database could be done using a web interface, a REST API and
1479) a DNS interface.</p>
1480) <p>In order not to grow indefinitely, the software should make regular tests to
1481) see if hidden services are still reachable and, depending on the last time
1482) a nickname was accessed, cleanup the database as necessary.</p>
1483) <p>The software should allow a distributed, fault-tolerant setup.
1484) All nodes should have a synchronized copy of the database, should be
1485) ready to answer queries and should coordinate the tests for hidden
1486) service availability.</p>
1487) <p>The resulting codebase must be easy to deploy: it should not be hard to
1488) setup new databases.</p>
1489) <p>It is expected that the volunteer will be using Behaviour Driven
1490) Development methods. Either in Ruby using Cucumber and RSpec, or in

1511) We'd like to do this with Tor, to improve its resistance to attacks. The
1512) easiest areas to address would be on systems like <a

1538) <p>The <a href="https://metrics.torproject.org/data.html">Metrics data
1539) archive</a> of Tor relay descriptors and other Tor-related network data has
1540) grown to over 100G in size, bz2-compressed. We have developed two search
1541) interfaces: the <a
1542) href="https://metrics.torproject.org/relay-search.html">relay search</a>
1543) finds relays by nickname, fingerprint, or IP address in a given month; <a
1544) href="https://metrics.torproject.org/exonerator.html">ExoneraTor</a> finds
1545) whether a given IP address was a relay on a given day.</p>
1546)
1547) <p>We'd like to have a more general search application for Tor descriptors
1548) and metrics data. There are more <a
1549) href="https://metrics.torproject.org/formats.html">descriptor types</a>
1550) that we'd like to include in the search. The search application should
1551) handle most of them and understand some semantics like what's a timestamp,
1552) what's an IP address, and what's a link to another descriptor. Users
1553) should then be able to search for arbitrary strings or limit their search
1554) to given time periods or IP address ranges. Descriptors that reference
1555) other descriptors should contain links, and descriptors should be able to
1556) say from where they are linked. The goal is to make the archive easily
1557) browsable.</p>
1558)
1559) <p>The search application shall be separate from the metrics website and
1560) shouldn't rely on the metrics website codebase. The search application
1561) will contain hourly updated descriptor data from the metrics website via
1562) rsync. Programming language and database system are not specified yet,
1563) though there's a slight preference for Python/Django and Postgres for
1564) maintenance reasons. If there are good reasons to pick something else,
1565) e.g, some NoSQL variant or some search application framework, that's fine,
1566) too. Further requirements are that lookups should be really fast and that
1567) changes to the search application can be implemented in reasonable
1568) time.</p>
1569)
1570) <p>Applications for this project should come with a design of the proposed
1571) search application, ideally with a proof-of-concept based on a subset of
1572) the available data to show that it will be able to handle the 100G+ of
1573) data.</p>

1587) Many users of Tor have poor-quality Internet connections, giving low
1588) bandwidth, high latency, and high packet loss/re-ordering. User
1589) experience is that Tor reacts badly to these conditions, but it is
1590) difficult to improve the situation without being able to repeat the

1593)

1595) This project would be to build a simulation environment which
1596) replicates the poor connectivity so that the effect on Tor performance
1597) can be measured. Other components would be a testing utility to

1602) <p>
1603) The tools used would be up to the student, but dummynet (for FreeBSD)
1604) and nistnet (for Linux) are two potential components on which this

To do this you'll want to both brainstorm some of your own and contact the <a href="https://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tor-dev/">tor-dev@ email list</a> to solicit ideas. 1736) <p>Hosting such data and infrastructure <b>in the cloud</b> generally
1737) implies to trust the service providers not to disclose content, usage or
1738) users location information to third-parties. Hence, there are many threat
1739) models in which cloud hosting is not suitable.</p>
1740) <p>Tor partly answers the <b>users location</b> part; this is great, but
1741) <b>content</b> is left unprotected.</p>
1742) <p>There are two main ways to protect such content: either to encrypt it
1743) client-side (<b>security by design</b>), or to avoid putting it into
1744) untrusted hands in the first place.</p>
1745) <p>Cloud solutions that offer security by design are rare and generally
1746) not mature yet. The <b>Tails server</b> project is about exploring the
1747) other side of the alternative: avoiding to put private data into
1748) untrusted hands in the first place.</p>
1749) <p>This is made possible thanks to Tor hidden services, that allow users
1750) to offer location-hidden services, and make self-hosting possible in
1751) many threat models. Self-hosting has its own lot of problems, however,
1752) particularly in contexts where the physical security of the hosting
1753) place is not assured. Combining Tor hidden services with Tails'
1754) amnesia property and limited support for persistent encrypted data
1755) allows to protect content, to a great degree, even in such contexts.</p>

1821) The Tor code is almost 10 years old in places, and we haven't always had
1822) enough time or wisdom to write things as well as we could have. Our unit
1823) test coverage is shamefully low, and the dependency graph of our modules is
1824) shamefully convoluted . We could use refactoring and unit tests! Please

1826) dependencies -- the uglier and trickier the better -- and think about how

1857) <p>There are a number of status changes inside Tor of which the user may need
1858) to be informed. For example, if the user is trying to set up his Tor as a
1859) relay and Tor decides that its ports are not reachable from outside
1860) the user's network, we should alert the user. Currently, all the user
1861) gets is a couple of log messages in Vidalia's 'message log' window, which they
1862) likely never see since they don't receive a notification that something
1863) has gone wrong. Even if the user does actually look at the message log,
1864) most of the messages make little sense to the novice user.</p>
1865) <p>Tor has the ability to inform Vidalia of many such status
1866) changes, and we recently implemented support for a couple of these
1867) events. Still, there are many more status events which the user should
1868) be informed of, and we need a better UI for actually displaying them
1869) to the user.</p>
1870) <p>The goal of this project then is to design and implement a UI for
1871) displaying Tor status events to the user. For example, we might put a
1872) little badge on Vidalia's tray icon that alerts the user to new status
1873) events they should look at. Double-clicking the icon could bring up a
1874) dialog that summarizes recent status events in simple terms and maybe
1875) suggests a remedy for any negative events if they can be corrected by
1876) the user. Of course, this is just an example and one is free to
1877) suggest another approach.</p>
1878) <p>A person undertaking this project should have good UI design and layout
1879) skills and some C++ development experience. Previous experience with Qt and
1880) Qt's Designer will be very helpful, but are not required. Some
1881) English writing ability will also be useful, since this project will
1882) likely involve writing small amounts of help documentation that should
1883) be understandable by non-technical users. Bonus points for some graphic
1884) design/Photoshop fu, since we might want/need some shiny new icons too.</p>

2081) <li>The "end-to-end traffic confirmation attack":
2082) by watching traffic at Alice and at Bob, we can <a
2083) href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#danezis:pet2004">compare
2084) traffic signatures and become convinced that we're watching the same
2085) stream</a>. So far Tor accepts this as a fact of life and assumes this
2086) attack is trivial in all cases. First of all, is that actually true? How
2087) much traffic of what sort of distribution is needed before the adversary
2088) is confident he has won? Are there scenarios (e.g. not transmitting much)
2089) that slow down the attack? Do some traffic padding or traffic shaping
2090) schemes work better than others?</li>
2091) <li>A related question is: Does running a relay/bridge provide additional
2092) protection against these timing attacks? Can an external adversary that can't
2093) see inside TLS links still recognize individual streams reliably?
2094) Does the amount of traffic carried degrade this ability any? What if the
2095) client-relay deliberately delayed upstream relayed traffic to create a queue
2096) that could be used to mimic timings of client downstream traffic to make it
2097) look like it was also relayed? This same queue could also be used for masking
2098) timings in client upstream traffic with the techniques from <a
2099) href="http://www.freehaven.net/anonbib/#ShWa-Timing06">adaptive padding</a>,
2100) but without the need for additional traffic. Would such an interleaving of
2101) client upstream traffic obscure timings for external adversaries? Would the
2102) strategies need to be adjusted for asymmetric links? For example, on
2103) asymmetric links, is it actually possible to differentiate client traffic from
2104) natural bursts due to their asymmetric capacity? Or is it easier than
2105) symmetric links for some other reason?</li>
2106) <li>Repeat Murdoch and Danezis's <a
2107) href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/projects/anon/#torta">attack from
2108) Oakland 05</a> on the current Tor network. See if you can learn why it
2109) works well on some nodes and not well on others. (My theory is that the
2110) fast nodes with spare capacity resist the attack better.) If that's true,
2111) then experiment with the RelayBandwidthRate and RelayBandwidthBurst
2112) options to run a relay that is used as a client while relaying the
2113) attacker's traffic: as we crank down the RelayBandwidthRate, does the
2114) attack get harder? What's the right ratio of RelayBandwidthRate to
2115) actually capacity? Or is it a ratio at all? While we're at it, does a
2116) much larger set of candidate relays increase the false positive rate
2117) or other complexity for the attack? (The Tor network is now almost two
2118) orders of magnitude larger than it was when they wrote their paper.) Be
2119) sure to read <a href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#clog-the-queue">Don't
2120) Clog the Queue</a> too.</li>
2121) <li>The "routing zones attack": most of the literature thinks of
2122) the network path between Alice and her entry node (and between the
2123) exit node and Bob) as a single link on some graph. In practice,
2124) though, the path traverses many autonomous systems (ASes), and <a
2125) href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#feamster:wpes2004">it's not uncommon
2126) that the same AS appears on both the entry path and the exit path</a>.
2127) Unfortunately, to accurately predict whether a given Alice, entry,
2128) exit, Bob quad will be dangerous, we need to download an entire Internet
2129) routing zone and perform expensive operations on it. Are there practical
2130) approximations, such as avoiding IP addresses in the same /8 network?</li>
2131) <li>Other research questions regarding geographic diversity consider
2132) the tradeoff between choosing an efficient circuit and choosing a random
2133) circuit. Look at Stephen Rollyson's <a
2134) href="http://swiki.cc.gatech.edu:8080/ugResearch/uploads/7/ImprovingTor.pdf">position
2135) paper</a> on how to discard particularly slow choices without hurting
2136) anonymity "too much". This line of reasoning needs more work and more
2137) thinking, but it looks very promising.</li>
2138) <li>Tor doesn't work very well when relays have asymmetric bandwidth
2139) (e.g. cable or DSL). Because Tor has separate TCP connections between
2140) each hop, if the incoming bytes are arriving just fine and the outgoing
2141) bytes are all getting dropped on the floor, the TCP push-back mechanisms
2142) don't really transmit this information back to the incoming streams.
2143) Perhaps Tor should detect when it's dropping a lot of outgoing packets,
2144) and rate-limit incoming streams to regulate this itself? I can imagine
2145) a build-up and drop-off scheme where we pick a conservative rate-limit,
2146) slowly increase it until we get lost packets, back off, repeat. We
2147) need somebody who's good with networks to simulate this and help design
2148) solutions; and/or we need to understand the extent of the performance
2149) degradation, and use this as motivation to reconsider UDP transport.</li>
2150) <li>A related topic is congestion control. Is our
2151) current design sufficient once we have heavy use? Maybe
2152) we should experiment with variable-sized windows rather
2153) than fixed-size windows? That seemed to go well in an <a

2155) throughput experiment</a>. We'll need to measure and tweak, and maybe
2156) overhaul if the results are good.</li>
2157) <li>Our censorship-resistance goals include preventing
2158) an attacker who's looking at Tor traffic on the wire from <a
2159) href="<svnprojects>design-paper/blocking.html#sec:network-fingerprint">distinguishing
2160) it from normal SSL traffic</a>. Obviously we can't achieve perfect
2161) steganography and still remain usable, but for a first step we'd like to
2162) block any attacks that can win by observing only a few packets. One of
2163) the remaining attacks we haven't examined much is that Tor cells are 512
2164) bytes, so the traffic on the wire may well be a multiple of 512 bytes.
2165) How much does the batching and overhead in TLS records blur this on the
2166) wire? Do different buffer flushing strategies in Tor affect this? Could
2167) a bit of padding help a lot, or is this an attack we must accept?</li>
2168) <li>Tor circuits are built one hop at a time, so in theory we have the
2169) ability to make some streams exit from the second hop, some from the
2170) third, and so on. This seems nice because it breaks up the set of exiting
2171) streams that a given relay can see. But if we want each stream to be safe,
2172) the "shortest" path should be at least 3 hops long by our current logic, so
2173) the rest will be even longer. We need to examine this performance / security
2174) tradeoff.</li>
2175) <li>It's not that hard to DoS Tor relays or directory authorities. Are client
2176) puzzles the right answer? What other practical approaches are there? Bonus
2177) if they're backward-compatible with the current Tor protocol.</li>

2182) by looking at that header. It tries to pick a string that is commonly used
2183) by non-Tor users too, so it doesn't stand out. Question one: how badly
2184) do we hurt ourselves by periodically updating the version of Firefox
2185) that Torbutton claims to be? If we update it too often, we splinter the
2186) anonymity sets ourselves. If we don't update it often enough, then all the

2188) of Firefox. The answer here probably depends on the Firefox versions seen
2189) in the wild. Question two: periodically people ask us to cycle through N
2190) UserAgent strings rather than stick with one. Does this approach help,
2191) hurt, or not matter? Consider: cookies and recognizing Torbutton users
