1019) The existing port of Tor to Android is basically a straight
1020) cross-compile to Linux ARM. There has been no work done in looking at
1021) possible optimizations of Tor within a mobile hardware environment or on
1022) mobile networks. In addition, a number of additional Android OS APIs are
1023) available (such as wireless network status) that could be taken
1024) advantage of.

1028) It should be noted, that even without optimisation, Tor is handling the
1029) mobile network environment very well, automatically detecting change in
1030) IP addresses, opening circuits, etc, as the device switches from no
1031) coverage to 2G, 3G or Wifi constantly as it changes position. However,
1032) this observation of &quot;very well&quot;, is just based on user

1187) <p>Tor needs to be tested far more thoroughly. This is a
1188) multi-part effort. To start with, our unit test coverage should
1189) rise substantially, especially in the areas outside the utility

1191) of Tor, in order to dissociate as much logic as possible from
1192) globals.</p>
1193) <p>Additionally, we need to automate our performance testing. We've got
1194) buildbot to automate our regular integration and compile testing already
1195) (though we need somebody to set it up on Windows),

1215) One of Vidalia's existing features is a network map that shows the user
1216) the approximate geographic location of relays in the Tor network and
1217) plots the paths the user's traffic takes as it is tunneled through the
1218) Tor network. The map is currently not very interactive and has rather
1219) poor graphics. Instead, we implemented KDE's Marble widget such
1220) that it gives us a better quality map and enables improved interactivity,
1221) such as allowing the user to click on individual relays or circuits to
1222) display additional information. We want to add the ability

1401) <a href="https://code.google.com/p/torsocks/">Torsocks</a> and <a
1402) href="https://code.google.com/p/dsocks/">dsocks</a> are wrappers that will
1403) run applications, intercept their outgoing network connections, and push
1404) those connections through Tor. The goal is to handle applications that
1405) don't support proxies (or don't supporting them well). To get it right,
1406) they need to intercept many system calls. The syscalls you need to
1407) intercept on Linux differ dramatically from those on BSD. So Torsocks
1408) works fine on Linux, dsocks works ok on BSD (though it may be less
1409) maintained and thus might miss more syscalls), and nothing works well
1410) on both. First, we should patch dsocks to use Tor's <i>mapaddress</i>
1411) commands from the controller interface, so we don't waste a whole
1412) round-trip inside Tor doing the resolve before connecting. Second,
1413) we should make our <i>torify</i> script detect which of torsocks or
1414) dsocks is installed, and call them appropriately. This probably means
1415) unifying their interfaces, and might involve sharing code between them

1483) <p>Tor provides hidden services. These services are only reachable through
1484) Tor itself, and provide greater anonymity both for the providers of the
1485) service and for its users.</p>
1486) <p>One current downside of Tor hidden services is that they are addressed
1487) using 80-bit base32-encoded addresses such as "v2cbb2l4lsnpio4q.onion".
1488) These addresses are hard to remember; this makes them hard to use
1489) within amnesic environment like Tails.</p>
1490) <p>The project is to implement a petname system for Tor hidden services:
1491) a way for users or providers of Tor hidden services to add a simple
1492) 'nickname' to a central database. Users could then query this central
1493) database to retrieve a full hidden service address by giving
1494) a nickname.</p>
1495) <p>Adding petnames to the database could be done using a web interface or
1496) automated fetch like those described in the <a
1497) href="https://gitweb.torproject.org/torspec.git/blob/HEAD:/proposals/ideas/xxx-onion-nyms.txt">&quot;.onion
1498) nym system&quot; proposal</a>.</p>
1499) <p>Querying the database could be done using a web interface, a REST API and
1500) a DNS interface.</p>
1501) <p>In order not to grow indefinitely, the software should make regular tests to
1502) see if hidden services are still reachable and, depending on the last time
1503) a nickname was accessed, cleanup the database as necessary.</p>
1504) <p>The software should allow a distributed, fault-tolerant setup.
1505) All nodes should have a synchronized copy of the database, should be
1506) ready to answer queries and should coordinate the tests for hidden
1507) service availability.</p>
1508) <p>The resulting codebase must be easy to deploy: it should not be hard to
1509) setup new databases.</p>
1510) <p>It is expected that the volunteer will be using Behaviour Driven

1667) <li>Come up with a better, more developer friendly "Module Overview" for our documentation (<a href="https://stem.torproject.org/api/control.html">example page</a>). For instance, it would be nice to provide interlinking between the overview and the classes/methods that it lists. This will probably involve asking for help from the <a href="http://sphinx-doc.org/">Sphinx user list</a>. (<a href="https://trac.torproject.org/7632">ticket</a>)</li>
1668) <li>Navigation of <a href="https://stem.torproject.org">stem's site</a> is clunky, in large part due to the linear page flow supported by sphinx. One possible fix for this would be css-only menus, ideally as a sphinx plugin so we could contribute it back upstream.(<a href="https://trac.torproject.org/8431">ticket</a>)</li>
1669) <li>After getting some exposure to stem it would be time to give using it a try. Tor has a couple clients (<a href="https://trac.torproject.org/8263">TorBEL</a> and <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/8264">Tor Weather</a>) that are ready to be moved to stem. Hopefully porting these will also provide us with some lessons on how we can further improve stem's API.</li>
1670) <li><b>... other ideas?</b> The above are just some ideas I've come up with to improve usability and likely not enough to fill the summer. Feel free to suggest some of your own! For instance, one option would be to expand <a href="https://stem.torproject.org/tutorial.html">stem's tutorials</a> with more examples, maybe <a href="https://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tor-dev/">contacting tor-dev@</a> to brainstorm ideas. This last bit is pretty open so I look forward to seeing what you come up with!</li>

1686) <p>
1687) Stem is a library for interacting with Tor (see '<a href="#stemUsability">Stem Usability and Porting</a>' above for a summary). The library has both <a href="https://gitweb.torproject.org/stem.git/tree/HEAD:/test/unit">unit</a> and <a href="https://gitweb.torproject.org/stem.git/tree/HEAD:/test/integ">integration</a> tests. The unit tests provide a quick, direct test of stem's codebase while the integration test exercises its functionality against a live instance of Tor.
1688) </p>
1689)
1690) <p>
1691) Stem's integration tests have thus far been (unsurprisingly) designed to test stem but there's no need for them to be limited to that. Stem is a complete implementation of Tor's <a href="https://gitweb.torproject.org/torspec.git/blob/HEAD:/control-spec.txt">control-spec</a> and <a href="https://gitweb.torproject.org/torspec.git/blob/HEAD:/dir-spec.txt">dir-spec</a>. As such, stem's tests could be easily expanded to more dedicatedly test behavior involved in those portions of Tor's codebase, as well as provide a smoke test for its general functionality.
1692) </p>
1693)
1694) <p>
1695) This project would involve several components:
1696) </p>
1697)
1698) <ol>
1699) <li>Determine what kind of tests we need. <b>This should be done during the application phase</b> by <a href="https://lists.torproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/tor-dev/">contacting tor-dev@</a>. Hopefully this will give us an idea of what would be the most useful kind of tests of this nature for Tor development.</li>
1700) <li>To be useful our integration tests need to continually run against the present tip of Tor's codebase. To do this we'll want to (1) fetch and compile the latest version of Tor, (2) run our integration tests against it, (3) compose the results as an html formatted email, and send it to a list. (<a href="https://trac.torproject.org/8261">ticket</a>)</li>
1701) <li>Implement the new suite of integration tests for Tor. This will likely include expanding Tor to support better testability. One useful candidate, for instance, would be a controller method to fetch our own descriptor. This would let us easily test various configurations to see if they provide valid descriptor content.</li>
1702) </ol>
1703)
1704) <p>
1705) <b>As part of your application for this project please write some code to expand stem's tests.</b> Bonus points if it impelments one of your suggestions for better testing Tor!

1720) <p>Hosting such data and infrastructure <b>in the cloud</b> generally
1721) implies to trust the service providers not to disclose content, usage or
1722) users location information to third-parties. Hence, there are many threat
1723) models in which cloud hosting is not suitable.</p>
1724) <p>Tor partly answers the <b>users location</b> part; this is great, but
1725) <b>content</b> is left unprotected.</p>
1726) <p>There are two main ways to protect such content: either to encrypt it
1727) client-side (<b>security by design</b>), or to avoid putting it into
1728) untrusted hands in the first place.</p>
1729) <p>Cloud solutions that offer security by design are rare and generally
1730) not mature yet. The <b>Tails server</b> project is about exploring the
1731) other side of the alternative: avoiding to put private data into
1732) untrusted hands in the first place.</p>
1733) <p>This is made possible thanks to Tor hidden services, that allow users
1734) to offer location-hidden services, and make self-hosting possible in
1735) many threat models. Self-hosting has its own lot of problems, however,
1736) particularly in contexts where the physical security of the hosting
1737) place is not assured. Combining Tor hidden services with Tails'
1738) amnesia property and limited support for persistent encrypted data
1739) allows to protect content, to a great degree, even in such contexts.</p>

1841) <p>There are a number of status changes inside Tor of which the user may need
1842) to be informed. For example, if the user is trying to set up his Tor as a
1843) relay and Tor decides that its ports are not reachable from outside
1844) the user's network, we should alert the user. Currently, all the user
1845) gets is a couple of log messages in Vidalia's 'message log' window, which they
1846) likely never see since they don't receive a notification that something
1847) has gone wrong. Even if the user does actually look at the message log,
1848) most of the messages make little sense to the novice user.</p>
1849) <p>Tor has the ability to inform Vidalia of many such status
1850) changes, and we recently implemented support for a couple of these
1851) events. Still, there are many more status events which the user should
1852) be informed of, and we need a better UI for actually displaying them
1853) to the user.</p>
1854) <p>The goal of this project then is to design and implement a UI for
1855) displaying Tor status events to the user. For example, we might put a
1856) little badge on Vidalia's tray icon that alerts the user to new status
1857) events they should look at. Double-clicking the icon could bring up a
1858) dialog that summarizes recent status events in simple terms and maybe
1859) suggests a remedy for any negative events if they can be corrected by
1860) the user. Of course, this is just an example and one is free to
1861) suggest another approach.</p>
1862) <p>A person undertaking this project should have good UI design and layout
1863) skills and some C++ development experience. Previous experience with Qt and
1864) Qt's Designer will be very helpful, but are not required. Some
1865) English writing ability will also be useful, since this project will
1866) likely involve writing small amounts of help documentation that should
1867) be understandable by non-technical users. Bonus points for some graphic
1868) design/Photoshop fu, since we might want/need some shiny new icons too.</p>

2069) by watching traffic at Alice and at Bob, we can <a
2070) href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#danezis:pet2004">compare
2071) traffic signatures and become convinced that we're watching the same
2072) stream</a>. So far Tor accepts this as a fact of life and assumes this
2073) attack is trivial in all cases. First of all, is that actually true? How
2074) much traffic of what sort of distribution is needed before the adversary
2075) is confident he has won? Are there scenarios (e.g. not transmitting much)
2076) that slow down the attack? Do some traffic padding or traffic shaping
2077) schemes work better than others?</li>
2078) <li>A related question is: Does running a relay/bridge provide additional
2079) protection against these timing attacks? Can an external adversary that can't
2080) see inside TLS links still recognize individual streams reliably?
2081) Does the amount of traffic carried degrade this ability any? What if the
2082) client-relay deliberately delayed upstream relayed traffic to create a queue
2083) that could be used to mimic timings of client downstream traffic to make it
2084) look like it was also relayed? This same queue could also be used for masking
2085) timings in client upstream traffic with the techniques from <a
2086) href="http://www.freehaven.net/anonbib/#ShWa-Timing06">adaptive padding</a>,
2087) but without the need for additional traffic. Would such an interleaving of
2088) client upstream traffic obscure timings for external adversaries? Would the
2089) strategies need to be adjusted for asymmetric links? For example, on
2090) asymmetric links, is it actually possible to differentiate client traffic from
2091) natural bursts due to their asymmetric capacity? Or is it easier than
2092) symmetric links for some other reason?</li>
2093) <li>Repeat Murdoch and Danezis's <a
2094) href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/projects/anon/#torta">attack from
2095) Oakland 05</a> on the current Tor network. See if you can learn why it
2096) works well on some nodes and not well on others. (My theory is that the
2097) fast nodes with spare capacity resist the attack better.) If that's true,
2098) then experiment with the RelayBandwidthRate and RelayBandwidthBurst
2099) options to run a relay that is used as a client while relaying the
2100) attacker's traffic: as we crank down the RelayBandwidthRate, does the
2101) attack get harder? What's the right ratio of RelayBandwidthRate to
2102) actually capacity? Or is it a ratio at all? While we're at it, does a
2103) much larger set of candidate relays increase the false positive rate
2104) or other complexity for the attack? (The Tor network is now almost two
2105) orders of magnitude larger than it was when they wrote their paper.) Be
2106) sure to read <a href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#clog-the-queue">Don't
2107) Clog the Queue</a> too.</li>
2108) <li>The "routing zones attack": most of the literature thinks of
2109) the network path between Alice and her entry node (and between the
2110) exit node and Bob) as a single link on some graph. In practice,
2111) though, the path traverses many autonomous systems (ASes), and <a
2112) href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#feamster:wpes2004">it's not uncommon
2113) that the same AS appears on both the entry path and the exit path</a>.
2114) Unfortunately, to accurately predict whether a given Alice, entry,
2115) exit, Bob quad will be dangerous, we need to download an entire Internet
2116) routing zone and perform expensive operations on it. Are there practical
2117) approximations, such as avoiding IP addresses in the same /8 network?</li>
2118) <li>Other research questions regarding geographic diversity consider
2119) the tradeoff between choosing an efficient circuit and choosing a random
2120) circuit. Look at Stephen Rollyson's <a
2121) href="http://swiki.cc.gatech.edu:8080/ugResearch/uploads/7/ImprovingTor.pdf">position
2122) paper</a> on how to discard particularly slow choices without hurting
2123) anonymity "too much". This line of reasoning needs more work and more
2124) thinking, but it looks very promising.</li>
2125) <li>Tor doesn't work very well when relays have asymmetric bandwidth
2126) (e.g. cable or DSL). Because Tor has separate TCP connections between
2127) each hop, if the incoming bytes are arriving just fine and the outgoing
2128) bytes are all getting dropped on the floor, the TCP push-back mechanisms
2129) don't really transmit this information back to the incoming streams.
2130) Perhaps Tor should detect when it's dropping a lot of outgoing packets,
2131) and rate-limit incoming streams to regulate this itself? I can imagine
2132) a build-up and drop-off scheme where we pick a conservative rate-limit,
2133) slowly increase it until we get lost packets, back off, repeat. We
2134) need somebody who's good with networks to simulate this and help design
2135) solutions; and/or we need to understand the extent of the performance
2136) degradation, and use this as motivation to reconsider UDP transport.</li>
2137) <li>A related topic is congestion control. Is our
2138) current design sufficient once we have heavy use? Maybe
2139) we should experiment with variable-sized windows rather
2140) than fixed-size windows? That seemed to go well in an <a

2149) block any attacks that can win by observing only a few packets. One of
2150) the remaining attacks we haven't examined much is that Tor cells are 512
2151) bytes, so the traffic on the wire may well be a multiple of 512 bytes.
2152) How much does the batching and overhead in TLS records blur this on the
2153) wire? Do different buffer flushing strategies in Tor affect this? Could
2154) a bit of padding help a lot, or is this an attack we must accept?</li>
2155) <li>Tor circuits are built one hop at a time, so in theory we have the
2156) ability to make some streams exit from the second hop, some from the
2157) third, and so on. This seems nice because it breaks up the set of exiting
2158) streams that a given relay can see. But if we want each stream to be safe,
2159) the "shortest" path should be at least 3 hops long by our current logic, so
2160) the rest will be even longer. We need to examine this performance / security
2161) tradeoff.</li>
2162) <li>It's not that hard to DoS Tor relays or directory authorities. Are client
2163) puzzles the right answer? What other practical approaches are there? Bonus
2164) if they're backward-compatible with the current Tor protocol.</li>

2167) your browser's UserAgent string by replacing it with a uniform answer for
2168) every Tor user. That way the attacker can't splinter Tor's anonymity set
2169) by looking at that header. It tries to pick a string that is commonly used
2170) by non-Tor users too, so it doesn't stand out. Question one: how badly
2171) do we hurt ourselves by periodically updating the version of Firefox
2172) that Torbutton claims to be? If we update it too often, we splinter the
2173) anonymity sets ourselves. If we don't update it often enough, then all the
2174) Tor users stand out because they claim to be running a quite old version
2175) of Firefox. The answer here probably depends on the Firefox versions seen
2176) in the wild. Question two: periodically people ask us to cycle through N
2177) UserAgent strings rather than stick with one. Does this approach help,
2178) hurt, or not matter? Consider: cookies and recognizing Torbutton users
2179) by their rotating UserAgents; malicious websites who only attack certain
2180) browsers; and whether the answers to question one impact this answer.

2182) <li>How many bridge relays do you need to know to maintain
2183) reachability? We should measure the churn in our bridges. If there is
2184) lots of churn, are there ways to keep bridge users more likely to stay
2185) connected?
