853) <p><a href="<page projects/arm>">Arm</a> is a Tor command line status
854) monitor on *nix environments (Linux, Mac, and BSD). It functions much like
855) top does, giving a CLI overlay of Tor's bandwidth usage, connections,
856) configuration, log, etc. Thus far its design has been geared for Tor relay
857) operators. However, this doesn't need to be the case. This project would be
858) to expand and simplify arm to make it useful for Tor's client users
859) too.</p>
860)
861) <p>This would include UI design, experimenting, and a lot of python
862) hacking. Here's some ideas for client functionality arm could provide:</p>
863)
864) <ul>
865) <li>A panel for client connections, showing each hop of the user's
866) circuits with the ISP, country, and jurisdiction where those relays
867) reside. Other interesting information would be the circuit's latency, how
868) long its been around, and its possible exit ports. Some of this will be
869) pretty tricky and require some experimentation to figure out what
870) information can be fetched safely (for instance, scraping rdns and whois
871) lookups could give hints about a relay's ISP, but we'd need to do it on
872) all Tor relays to avoid leaking our connections to the resolver).</li>
873)
874) <li>Options to let the user request new circuits (the &quot;New
875) Identity&quot; feature in Vidalia), select the exit country, etc.</li>
876)
877) <li>A panel showing Internet application and if their connections are
878) being routed through Tor or not (giving a warning if there's leaks).</li>
879)
880) <li>The status of the bridges we're configured to use (ie, are they up?).
881) This would include adding control port functionality to Tor for <a
882) href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/2068">ticket
883) 2068</a>.</li>
884)
885) <li>A one click option to set Tor to be a client, relay, or bridge. The
886) goal would be to make it trivial for users to voluntarily contribute to
887) the Tor network.</li>
888)
889) <li>Menus as an alternative to hotkeys to make the interface more
890) intuitive and usable for beginners (<a
891) href="http://gnosis.cx/publish/programming/charming_python_6.html">example</a>).</li>
892)
893) <li>Look at Vidalia and TorK for ideas and solicit input from the Tor community.</li>
894) </ul>
895)
896) <p>
897) More information is available in the following sections of arm's dev notes: <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/arm#ConnectionListingExpansion">Connection Listing Expansion</a>, <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/arm#CircuitDetails">Circuit Details</a>, and <a href="https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/arm#ClientModeUseCases">Client Mode Use Cases</a>

911) <p>
912) Compass was first designed to be a cli app and then hacked into a web app.
913) The codebase needs to be refactored such that the main processing code is
914) separated from the display functions(probably into separate files) and made
915) modular so that adding more features (<a
916) href="https://trac.torproject.org/6612">#6612</a>) is easy. For example, the
917) main processing logic could be in compass.py, whereas print_groups() and other
918) display related functions could be part of a separate cli.py; web.py would also
919) have to modified to make use of this new modular code. Bonus points for adding

937) The existing port of Tor to Android is basically a straight
938) cross-compile to Linux ARM. There has been no work done in looking at
939) possible optimizations of Tor within a mobile hardware environment or on

946) It should be noted, that even without optimisation, Tor is handling the
947) mobile network environment very well, automatically detecting change in
948) IP addresses, opening circuits, etc, as the device switches from no

1105) <p>Tor needs to be tested far more thoroughly. This is a
1106) multi-part effort. To start with, our unit test coverage should
1107) rise substantially, especially in the areas outside the utility
1108) functions. This will require significant refactoring of some parts
1109) of Tor, in order to dissociate as much logic as possible from
1110) globals.</p>
1111) <p>Additionally, we need to automate our performance testing. We've got

1133) One of Vidalia's existing features is a network map that shows the user
1134) the approximate geographic location of relays in the Tor network and
1135) plots the paths the user's traffic takes as it is tunneled through the
1136) Tor network. The map is currently not very interactive and has rather
1137) poor graphics. Instead, we implemented KDE's Marble widget such
1138) that it gives us a better quality map and enables improved interactivity,
1139) such as allowing the user to click on individual relays or circuits to
1140) display additional information. We want to add the ability
1141) for users to click on a particular relay or a country containing one or
1142) more Tor exit relays and say, "I want my connections to exit
1143) from here."
1144) </p>
1145)
1146) <p>
1147) This project will first involve getting familiar with Vidalia
1148) and the Marble widget's API. One will then integrate the widget
1149) into Vidalia and customize Marble to be better suited for our application,
1150) such as making circuits clickable, storing cached map data in Vidalia's
1151) own data directory, and customizing some of the widget's dialogs.
1152) </p>

1320) href="https://code.google.com/p/dsocks/">dsocks</a> are wrappers that will
1321) run applications, intercept their outgoing network connections, and push
1322) those connections through Tor. The goal is to handle applications that
1323) don't support proxies (or don't supporting them well). To get it right,
1324) they need to intercept many system calls. The syscalls you need to
1325) intercept on Linux differ dramatically from those on BSD. So Torsocks
1326) works fine on Linux, dsocks works ok on BSD (though it may be less
1327) maintained and thus might miss more syscalls), and nothing works well
1328) on both. First, we should patch dsocks to use Tor's <i>mapaddress</i>
1329) commands from the controller interface, so we don't waste a whole

1450) We'd like to do this with Tor, to improve its resistance to attacks. The
1451) easiest areas to address would be on systems like <a
1452) href="https://lwn.net/Articles/475361/">recent Linux kernels</a> that make

1454) That's a great project, but probably not big enough for an internship just
1455) on its own. For that, we'd want to make progress on at least multiple
1456) platforms, or look into refactoring Tor into pieces that need more

1477) <p>The <a href="https://metrics.torproject.org/data.html">Metrics data
1478) archive</a> of Tor relay descriptors and other Tor-related network data has
1479) grown to over 100G in size, bz2-compressed. We have developed two search
1480) interfaces: the <a
1481) href="https://metrics.torproject.org/relay-search.html">relay search</a>
1482) finds relays by nickname, fingerprint, or IP address in a given month; <a
1483) href="https://metrics.torproject.org/exonerator.html">ExoneraTor</a> finds
1484) whether a given IP address was a relay on a given day.</p>
1485)
1486) <p>We'd like to have a more general search application for Tor descriptors
1487) and metrics data. There are more <a
1488) href="https://metrics.torproject.org/formats.html">descriptor types</a>
1489) that we'd like to include in the search. The search application should
1490) handle most of them and understand some semantics like what's a timestamp,
1491) what's an IP address, and what's a link to another descriptor. Users
1492) should then be able to search for arbitrary strings or limit their search
1493) to given time periods or IP address ranges. Descriptors that reference
1494) other descriptors should contain links, and descriptors should be able to
1495) say from where they are linked. The goal is to make the archive easily
1496) browsable.</p>
1497)
1498) <p>The search application shall be separate from the metrics website and
1499) shouldn't rely on the metrics website codebase. The search application
1500) will contain hourly updated descriptor data from the metrics website via
1501) rsync. Programming language and database system are not specified yet,
1502) though there's a slight preference for Python/Django and Postgres for
1503) maintenance reasons. If there are good reasons to pick something else,
1504) e.g, some NoSQL variant or some search application framework, that's fine,
1505) too. Further requirements are that lookups should be really fast and that
1506) changes to the search application can be implemented in reasonable
1507) time.</p>
1508)
1509) <p>Applications for this project should come with a design of the proposed
1510) search application, ideally with a proof-of-concept based on a subset of
1511) the available data to show that it will be able to handle the 100G+ of
1512) data.</p>

1526) Many users of Tor have poor-quality Internet connections, giving low
1527) bandwidth, high latency, and high packet loss/re-ordering. User
1528) experience is that Tor reacts badly to these conditions, but it is
1529) difficult to improve the situation without being able to repeat the
1530) problems in the lab.
1531) </p>
1532)
1533) <p>
1534) This project would be to build a simulation environment which
1535) replicates the poor connectivity so that the effect on Tor performance
1536) can be measured. Other components would be a testing utility to
1537) establish what are the properties of connections available, and to
1538) measure the effect of performance-improving modifications to Tor.
1539) </p>
1540)
1541) <p>
1542) The tools used would be up to the student, but dummynet (for FreeBSD)
1543) and nistnet (for Linux) are two potential components on which this
1544) project could be built. Students should be experienced with network

1676) implies to trust the service providers not to disclose content, usage or
1677) users location information to third-parties. Hence, there are many threat
1678) models in which cloud hosting is not suitable.</p>
1679) <p>Tor partly answers the <b>users location</b> part; this is great, but
1680) <b>content</b> is left unprotected.</p>
1681) <p>There are two main ways to protect such content: either to encrypt it

1684) <p>Cloud solutions that offer security by design are rare and generally

1688) <p>This is made possible thanks to Tor hidden services, that allow users

1693) amnesia property and limited support for persistent encrypted data

1760) The Tor code is almost 10 years old in places, and we haven't always had
1761) enough time or wisdom to write things as well as we could have. Our unit
1762) test coverage is shamefully low, and the dependency graph of our modules is
1763) shamefully convoluted . We could use refactoring and unit tests! Please
1764) look through the Tor source code and look for ugly or tricky code or
1765) dependencies -- the uglier and trickier the better -- and think about how
1766) you could make the code look better, read better, and (subject to testing)
1767) work better.

1796) <p>There are a number of status changes inside Tor of which the user may need
1797) to be informed. For example, if the user is trying to set up his Tor as a
1798) relay and Tor decides that its ports are not reachable from outside
1799) the user's network, we should alert the user. Currently, all the user
1800) gets is a couple of log messages in Vidalia's 'message log' window, which they
1801) likely never see since they don't receive a notification that something
1802) has gone wrong. Even if the user does actually look at the message log,
1803) most of the messages make little sense to the novice user.</p>
1804) <p>Tor has the ability to inform Vidalia of many such status
1805) changes, and we recently implemented support for a couple of these
1806) events. Still, there are many more status events which the user should
1807) be informed of, and we need a better UI for actually displaying them
1808) to the user.</p>
1809) <p>The goal of this project then is to design and implement a UI for
1810) displaying Tor status events to the user. For example, we might put a
1811) little badge on Vidalia's tray icon that alerts the user to new status
1812) events they should look at. Double-clicking the icon could bring up a
1813) dialog that summarizes recent status events in simple terms and maybe
1814) suggests a remedy for any negative events if they can be corrected by
1815) the user. Of course, this is just an example and one is free to
1816) suggest another approach.</p>
1817) <p>A person undertaking this project should have good UI design and layout
1818) skills and some C++ development experience. Previous experience with Qt and
1819) Qt's Designer will be very helpful, but are not required. Some
1820) English writing ability will also be useful, since this project will
1821) likely involve writing small amounts of help documentation that should
1822) be understandable by non-technical users. Bonus points for some graphic
1823) design/Photoshop fu, since we might want/need some shiny new icons too.</p>

1840) full port of TorButton needs to be done (dependent upon Firefox 4 port of

2019) <ol>
2020) <li>The "end-to-end traffic confirmation attack":
2021) by watching traffic at Alice and at Bob, we can <a
2022) href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#danezis:pet2004">compare
2023) traffic signatures and become convinced that we're watching the same
2024) stream</a>. So far Tor accepts this as a fact of life and assumes this
2025) attack is trivial in all cases. First of all, is that actually true? How
2026) much traffic of what sort of distribution is needed before the adversary
2027) is confident he has won? Are there scenarios (e.g. not transmitting much)
2028) that slow down the attack? Do some traffic padding or traffic shaping
2029) schemes work better than others?</li>
2030) <li>A related question is: Does running a relay/bridge provide additional
2031) protection against these timing attacks? Can an external adversary that can't
2032) see inside TLS links still recognize individual streams reliably?
2033) Does the amount of traffic carried degrade this ability any? What if the
2034) client-relay deliberately delayed upstream relayed traffic to create a queue
2035) that could be used to mimic timings of client downstream traffic to make it
2036) look like it was also relayed? This same queue could also be used for masking
2037) timings in client upstream traffic with the techniques from <a
2038) href="http://www.freehaven.net/anonbib/#ShWa-Timing06">adaptive padding</a>,
2039) but without the need for additional traffic. Would such an interleaving of
2040) client upstream traffic obscure timings for external adversaries? Would the
2041) strategies need to be adjusted for asymmetric links? For example, on
2042) asymmetric links, is it actually possible to differentiate client traffic from
2043) natural bursts due to their asymmetric capacity? Or is it easier than
2044) symmetric links for some other reason?</li>
2045) <li>Repeat Murdoch and Danezis's <a
2046) href="http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/projects/anon/#torta">attack from
2047) Oakland 05</a> on the current Tor network. See if you can learn why it
2048) works well on some nodes and not well on others. (My theory is that the
2049) fast nodes with spare capacity resist the attack better.) If that's true,
2050) then experiment with the RelayBandwidthRate and RelayBandwidthBurst
2051) options to run a relay that is used as a client while relaying the
2052) attacker's traffic: as we crank down the RelayBandwidthRate, does the
2053) attack get harder? What's the right ratio of RelayBandwidthRate to
2054) actually capacity? Or is it a ratio at all? While we're at it, does a
2055) much larger set of candidate relays increase the false positive rate
2056) or other complexity for the attack? (The Tor network is now almost two
2057) orders of magnitude larger than it was when they wrote their paper.) Be
2058) sure to read <a href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#clog-the-queue">Don't
2059) Clog the Queue</a> too.</li>
2060) <li>The "routing zones attack": most of the literature thinks of
2061) the network path between Alice and her entry node (and between the
2062) exit node and Bob) as a single link on some graph. In practice,
2063) though, the path traverses many autonomous systems (ASes), and <a
2064) href="http://freehaven.net/anonbib/#feamster:wpes2004">it's not uncommon
2065) that the same AS appears on both the entry path and the exit path</a>.
2066) Unfortunately, to accurately predict whether a given Alice, entry,
2067) exit, Bob quad will be dangerous, we need to download an entire Internet
2068) routing zone and perform expensive operations on it. Are there practical
2069) approximations, such as avoiding IP addresses in the same /8 network?</li>
2070) <li>Other research questions regarding geographic diversity consider
2071) the tradeoff between choosing an efficient circuit and choosing a random
2072) circuit. Look at Stephen Rollyson's <a
2073) href="http://swiki.cc.gatech.edu:8080/ugResearch/uploads/7/ImprovingTor.pdf">position
2074) paper</a> on how to discard particularly slow choices without hurting
2075) anonymity "too much". This line of reasoning needs more work and more
2076) thinking, but it looks very promising.</li>
2077) <li>Tor doesn't work very well when relays have asymmetric bandwidth
2078) (e.g. cable or DSL). Because Tor has separate TCP connections between
2079) each hop, if the incoming bytes are arriving just fine and the outgoing
2080) bytes are all getting dropped on the floor, the TCP push-back mechanisms
2081) don't really transmit this information back to the incoming streams.
2082) Perhaps Tor should detect when it's dropping a lot of outgoing packets,
2083) and rate-limit incoming streams to regulate this itself? I can imagine
2084) a build-up and drop-off scheme where we pick a conservative rate-limit,
2085) slowly increase it until we get lost packets, back off, repeat. We
2086) need somebody who's good with networks to simulate this and help design
2087) solutions; and/or we need to understand the extent of the performance
2088) degradation, and use this as motivation to reconsider UDP transport.</li>
2089) <li>A related topic is congestion control. Is our
2090) current design sufficient once we have heavy use? Maybe
2091) we should experiment with variable-sized windows rather
2092) than fixed-size windows? That seemed to go well in an <a

2094) throughput experiment</a>. We'll need to measure and tweak, and maybe
2095) overhaul if the results are good.</li>
2096) <li>Our censorship-resistance goals include preventing
2097) an attacker who's looking at Tor traffic on the wire from <a
2098) href="<svnprojects>design-paper/blocking.html#sec:network-fingerprint">distinguishing
2099) it from normal SSL traffic</a>. Obviously we can't achieve perfect
2100) steganography and still remain usable, but for a first step we'd like to
2101) block any attacks that can win by observing only a few packets. One of
2102) the remaining attacks we haven't examined much is that Tor cells are 512
2103) bytes, so the traffic on the wire may well be a multiple of 512 bytes.
2104) How much does the batching and overhead in TLS records blur this on the
2105) wire? Do different buffer flushing strategies in Tor affect this? Could
2106) a bit of padding help a lot, or is this an attack we must accept?</li>
2107) <li>Tor circuits are built one hop at a time, so in theory we have the
2108) ability to make some streams exit from the second hop, some from the
2109) third, and so on. This seems nice because it breaks up the set of exiting
2110) streams that a given relay can see. But if we want each stream to be safe,
2111) the "shortest" path should be at least 3 hops long by our current logic, so
2112) the rest will be even longer. We need to examine this performance / security
2113) tradeoff.</li>
2114) <li>It's not that hard to DoS Tor relays or directory authorities. Are client
2115) puzzles the right answer? What other practical approaches are there? Bonus
2116) if they're backward-compatible with the current Tor protocol.</li>

2119) your browser's UserAgent string by replacing it with a uniform answer for
2120) every Tor user. That way the attacker can't splinter Tor's anonymity set
2121) by looking at that header. It tries to pick a string that is commonly used
2122) by non-Tor users too, so it doesn't stand out. Question one: how badly
2123) do we hurt ourselves by periodically updating the version of Firefox
2124) that Torbutton claims to be? If we update it too often, we splinter the
2125) anonymity sets ourselves. If we don't update it often enough, then all the
2126) Tor users stand out because they claim to be running a quite old version
2127) of Firefox. The answer here probably depends on the Firefox versions seen
2128) in the wild. Question two: periodically people ask us to cycle through N
2129) UserAgent strings rather than stick with one. Does this approach help,
2130) hurt, or not matter? Consider: cookies and recognizing Torbutton users
2131) by their rotating UserAgents; malicious websites who only attack certain
2132) browsers; and whether the answers to question one impact this answer.
